Welcome to Unwrapped Chapters.
I'm a single mum to an amazing 12-year-old daughter and 2 fur-babies, a lifelong book lover, and currently in the final years of my Information Studies degree specialising in Children's Librarianship.
I'm also a member of ALIA, a devoted Bookstagrammer (you can check out my Instagram/s at @unwrappedchapters or @becsbookshelf24), and someone who firmly believes there is no such thing as owning too many books.
In fact, I'm currently on a mission to build a home library of 1,000 books. I'm a little over halfway there, so if anyone asks, the overflowing bookshelves are not a problem—they're progress.
My Story
Books have always been part of my life.
As a child, I adored the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. I still have my well-loved copy sitting proudly on my bookshelf today. As a teenager, I fell headfirst into the world of Harry Potter and, if I'm being honest, I never really climbed back out.
Like many adults, though, life got busy.
Work, parenting, responsibilities, and the general chaos of being a grown-up meant reading slipped down the priority list for a while.
Thankfully, over the past few years I've found my way back to books, and it has reminded me just how powerful stories can be—not just for children, but for parents too.
Why I Started Unwrapped Chapters
When my daughter was younger, I spent a lot of time wondering if I was doing enough.
Was I reading to her enough?
Was I choosing the right books?
Was I helping her learn the things she needed to learn?
If you're a parent, you'll probably recognise that feeling. The mental load can be relentless.
There's often this quiet pressure to get everything right, and reading can become one more thing on the never-ending checklist.
The truth is, most parents are doing far better than they think they are.
I started Unwrapped Chapters because I wanted to create the resource I wish I'd had back then—a place with real recommendations, practical ideas, and no judgement.
A place that helps take a little of the guesswork out of raising readers.
The idea actually came to me while working on an assessment for my degree. Somewhere between researching children's literacy and recommending books to absolutely everyone around me, it clicked.
This could help people.
So here we are.
What You'll Find Here
At its heart, Unwrapped Chapters is about helping families build a love of reading.
Here you'll find:
Children's book recommendations by age
Honest reviews and reading lists
Literacy and reading tips for parents
Ideas for creating positive reading habits
Recommendations for grown-ups too—because parents deserve great books as much as kids do
Most importantly, you'll find recommendations from a real parent, not a generic list generated by someone who's never had to read the same bedtime story fourteen nights in a row.
A Few Fun Facts About Me
My childhood favourite was Winnie-the-Pooh.
I'm currently obsessed with the full-cast Harry Potter audiobooks.
The Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas is EVERYTHING - especially Kingdom of Ash - not a day goes by that I don't think about that book!
I read across almost every genre.
My dream home includes floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, near a lake, with no neighbours close by so I can sit and just enjoy nature, reading and life.
I will absolutely judge a book by its cover... and then usually buy it anyway!
My Mission
If you leave this site with a new book recommendation, a smile, and a little less parental guilt than when you arrived, I'll consider that a win.
I want Unwrapped Chapters to be a place parents return to throughout their family's reading journey—a trusted hub filled with practical recommendations, honest advice, and the occasional dose of humour when parenting feels a little overwhelming.
So grab a coffee, have a browse, and make yourself at home.
I'm glad you're here.
